THE NURAGHE

The Nuraghe civilization was the first to settle in Sardinia ( 1500 b.C). It left on this island more than 700 monuments, which give Sardinian landscape his picturesque appearance: The Nuraghe or Nuraghe towers, huge towers built with dried bricks, in order to defend oneself. In these fortifying houses lived the chiefs of the tribes with their family and their garrison: they were something like the medieval castles.

One of the most famous Nuraghe is, without doubt, "Su Nuraxi", located at Barumini. The nuraghe is made up of a central tower surrounded by a bastion with four towers, which is contained in a wide hexagonal rampart, provided with seven towers. "Su nuraxi", the taller tower, dates back to the XII—XI century.

Other interesting evidences of this mystery civilization are: The Nuraghe "S.Antine" in Torralba e the Nuraghe Losa in Oristano.

Besides, in many parts of Sardinian land you can easily see little caves, to line up on the wall of the rocks. According to a popular belief, they are "domus de janas," (in the local dialect), that is house of fairies, witches or ogres. Actually, they are very ancient hypogeal tombs excavated within the rock, some of then dating back to 3000 e il 1500 a.C., others more recent.

Festivities and traditions

The ancient land of Sardinia is tight bound with his own traditions, above all with the religious ones. Every month of the year a feast can’t be missing somewhere in the island... [traditions in Sardinia]
Sardinian Cousine

Proud of its isolation, Sardinia can be probably considered the least "Italian" region of the Country.
During the centuries the island was ruled by different peoples: the Romans, the Byzantines, the Genoese, the Spanish and at the end, the Italians. These peoples have left a deep mark in the local culture and cooking. [Sardinian cousine]
